National League for Democracy (NLD) has directed its members to seek approval if they want to compete in the committee-wise elections of Yangon City Development Committee.

The directive, signed by secretariat member of the NLD's Central Executive Committee Nyan Win, was sent to the Yangon Region NLD on January 14.

"In democracies, political parties send their members to be elected for regional administrative mechanism. Now we have issued a directive so that our members can implement the party policies in regional administration," said NLD spokesperson Dr Myo Nyunt.

Township executive committees will select election candidates. Then, CEC approval must be sought with the endorsement from regional executive committees.

Those who want to run for the YCDC elections without seeking party approval will have to resign from the party, says the directive.

"Without seeking party consent, one can run for the elections independently. But we are concerned that it may cause disagreement within the party," said Dr Myo Nyunt.

Candidate applications must be submitted from January 18 to 28 so CEC's approval must be sought before the application submission.

K2 billion will be spent on holding the YCDC elections due on March 31 this year. A total of 105 people need to be elected to serve under YCDC at various levels.
