The whole of Mon state is home to more than 1,753,000 eligible voters till December last year and the number had increased by over 3,900 compared to the month before.

Voter lists of Mon State were sent to the Union Election Commission on January 2 this year. The lists exclude those of military units. Voter lists from the military have to be made at the order of the UEC, said Hein Lin Htet, secretary of Mon State Election Sub-commission.

The sub-commission is due to hold a meeting with political parties, civil society organizations and media on January 23 so as to hold the 2020 election in accord with the five standards.

The commission secretary said the meeting will explain matters related to election procedures, tasks to be carried out by the party so that correct voter lists can be announced and ask about the requirements and difficulties facing the parties.

The five standards for the next election to be held later this year are freedom, equality, transparency, public trust and the emergence of election results as people expect.

In the 2015 general election, Mon State had over 1.5 million voters and 919 polling stations. In the 2020 election, there will be over 1.7 million voters and 971 polling stations including 47 from the military.
