Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) founder Peng Jiasheng has died at the age of 94, according to sources close to the MNDAA.

Peng Jiasheng died in the early hours of February 16.

U Maung Maung Soe, a columnist and also an observer of ethnic armed groups, wrote on his social media page, “At 5:40 am on February 16, 2022, Peng Jiasheng, a prominent Kokang leader, died at the age of 94. Peng Jiasheng, a CPB commander from the Kokang dynasty's defense chief and the first to rebel against the CPB in 1989, is a man of many talents and abilities. From my personal point of view, his brother Peng Jiafu is superior in military prowess and Peng Jiasheng is superior in administration.”

Peng Jiasheng was a commander of the Communist Party of Burma (CPB) and broke away from the CPB in 1989. He formed the MNDAA after making peace with the Tatmadaw government. After an agreement with the Tatmadaw government, the Tatmadaw government designated Peng Jiasheng's MNDAA-based Laukkai area as Special Region 1 in northern Shan State.

In 2009, the Tatmadaw invaded and occupied the MNDAA stronghold after the MNDAA opposed the Tatmadaw government's formation of a border guard force, claiming that the MNDAA had set up a drug factory and an arms factory.

In 2015, MNDAA troops resumed military operations and clashed with the Tatmadaw.
