Locals displaced by Taungoo fighting need food

There are nearly 500 displaced villagers in the compound of Myat Sawnyinaung Pagoda, Taungoo Township, Bago Region and they urgently need food and humanitarian assistance, according to the locals.

“For the displaced villagers, three temporarily refugee camps are being opened in the Myat Sawnyinaung Pagoda and food, clothes and blankets are urgently needed,” said unidentified official from local social organization.

“Mainly, rice is urgently needed. It is a winter so they need blankets. The dwellers from Taungoo Township and local social organizations help the displaced villagers and well-wishers also donated rice and meals,” one of the locals.

It is reported that there are 96 households comprising with 445 family members sheltered at the Myat Sawnyinaung Pagoda. 

“The number of displaced villagers may increase. The locals from nearby villages in Taungoo Township fled to Taungoo town aiming to avoid the war in an advance because the fighting took place in their nearby villages. There will be ongoing fighting in nearby villages of Taungoo Township,” said a local from Taungoo Township.

Among the displaced villagers, there were three injured villagers who are now taking medical treatment at the Taungoo People’s Hospital.
