Myanmar will spend Ks1,000 billion earmarked for natural disaster fund on Covid-19 prevention, control and treatment measures, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has said.

As chairperson of the National Level Central Committee for Covid-19 Prevention, Control and Treatment also, she disclosed the information during a televised speech on the latest Covid-19 situation at 8 pm on September 21.

“When it comes to the Covid-19 outbreak, we will not only see the ongoing issues. But we will also see foreseeable issues. We will still face economic hardships to a certain degree in the post-Covid-19 period. All our people have known that this is happening globally. Even most powerful economies are being affected. But we are getting prepared. For example, we have a general surplus fund. The finance ministry has approved it. We have earmarked over Ks1,000 billion for natural disaster. So, Covid-19 is also a natural disaster. This money is for Covid-19 alone. We have separate funds for other natural disasters,” said the State Counsellor.

She then called on the public not to be overly worried but admitted to much struggle for the outbreak due to recklessness. She also called for greatest efforts to overcome the crisis.

The State Counsellor added that despite the country’s inability to develop a vaccine, the government is planning to collect vaccines as quickly as possible when they emerge.
