Japan’s special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar meets with a leader from the National League for Democracy

YANGON- Yohei Sasakawa, Japan’s special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar and chairman of the Nippon Foundation, says he met with a leadership member from the National League for Democracy (NLD).

Mr. Sasakawa held a press conference on November 18 at Melia Hotel in Yangon regarding his trip to Myanmar.

“Yes, the news that I met with a leader from the NLD is correct. However, I cannot disclose the identity of this person,” Mr. Sasakawa said in his press conference.

“I want to see Myanmar as a very united, federal union. I will try my best to achieve this goal,” he added.

Mr. Sasakawa, Japan’s special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar and chairman of the Nippon Foundation, arrived to Myanmar on November 12 and has met with SAC Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Union Minister of Home Affairs, Union Minister of Border Affairs, Union Minister of Health and other government authorities.

Additionally, Mr. Sasakawa met and discussed with leaders from political parties such as the Shan National League for Democracy (SNLD), Arakan National Party (ANP), People’s Party (PP), Myanmar Farmers Development Party, and Federal Union Party.

Mr. Sasakawa also revealed in his remarks to Kyodo News that the United States government sought his help to gain the freedom of journalist Danny Fenster who was recently sentenced to  11 years by a military court.
