Japan aided Myanmar with S$1.4 B within three years

Japan provided US$1.4 billion in aid, including ODA loan to Myanmar within a three year time, and is planning to provide up to ¥800 billion in 2020, according to Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s Myanmar Office.

Japan provided oversea development assistance loan, technical and general aid to Myanmar within a three years time span.

“Japan granted US$1.4 billion aid in total from ODA loan, grant and technical aid to Myanmar within three-year time. Japan agreed to provide ¥800 billion from 2016 to 2020 when the Japanese Prime Minister met with State Counsellor of Myanmar,” said Masayuki Karasawa, Chief Representative of JICA Myanmar Office.

The ¥800 billion aid will be used to develop nine strategies in transport sector of  Yangon. The strategies included pilot project to ease traffic jam, bus TA project, project to upgrade Yangon circular railroads and Yangon Urban Mass Rapid Transit (YUMRT).

High quality public transport system is needed to meet with the requirement of people in Yangon.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is conducted feasibility test to implement the YUMRT from May 2018. It will connect between east and west, north and south of Yangon with elevated railroads.

Japan provided ¥1,250 billion of ODA loan, ¥55.6 billion of grant aid and ¥98 billion of technical aid in 2016.

Japan also provided ¥1,278 billion of ODA loan, ¥30.6 billion of grant aid and ¥92 billion of technical aid in 2017.
