Taungoo District sees heatstroke deaths amidst scorching temperatures

Due to the scorching daytime temperatures in certain townships of Taungoo District, Bago Region, tragic heatstroke fatalities have been reported by local residents.

"My father's elder brother was among the victims," shared a niece on her Facebook page. "At 93 years old, he succumbed to heatstroke. While I lack the financial means to assist with funeral expenses, I have volunteered for funeral arrangements."

Similarly, a resident of Yadashe Township recounted the demise of a man from Ingyin Gone village in his sleep due to heatstroke. Another victim, from Thapyatan village, returned home from the heat, drank ice water, and took a shower, only to lose consciousness and pass away on the spot. The toll now stands at three fatalities due to heatstroke.

According to the April bulletin from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Taungoo Township registered a significant daytime temperature of 43.2°C. Notably, in April 2021, Taungoo experienced its highest temperature of 44.7°C. Daytime temperatures are projected to soar across the country, with some regions and states breaking previous records, surpassing 44°C. However, an official from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology in Taungoo clarified that Taungoo town did not reach its highest daytime temperature.

Relief came in the form of rain pouring down in Taungoo Township on the night of May 2. However, as of April 6, no rain had fallen, with skies remaining dull and overcast.
