Former KBC Chairman sentenced to 6 years in prison

A special court in Myitkyina sentenced Dr. Hkalam Samson, former chairman of Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) and who is currently the chair of Kachin National Consultative Assembly to six years in prison on three charges on April 7 according to sources close to his family members.

He was sentenced two years under Section 17 (1), one year under Section 505 (a) and three years under Section 52 (a) totaling 6 years.

“The authority contacted his family members on April 6. He is in good health. We are forming a committee for his cases. Members of our association are in poor spirit,” said a person close to Dr. Hkalam  Samsom.

He was arrested on December 5, 2022 at the Mandalay Tada Oo International Airport. He was transferred to Myitkyina prison on December 28.

He served as a secretary of the Kachin Baptist Convention for 8 years, as a Chairman for 4 years.  He is currently serving as chair of Kachin National Consultative Assembly (WMR).

A senior military official from Northern Command Headquarters filed a lawsuit against him in Myitkyina court on August 26, 2019 for meeting with then U.S President Donlad Trump at the White House on July 18, 2019 for discussing religious persecution and armed conflicts in Myanmar. The charges were later dropped on September 9.
