Former Chief Minister of Mon State Dr Aye Zan and former Chief Minister of Sagaing Region Dr Myint Naing have been sentenced to two years each under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code of Myanmar, according to sources close to their lawyers.

Dr Aye Zan was charged with incitement over his persuasion to get civil servants to join the CDM (civil disobedience movement) in February, and received the sentence on December 20 at a special court opened at Kyaikmaraw Prison.  

The special court sentenced him to two years and labour on December 20. It is unclear whether he will lodge an appeal or not, said a source close to his lawyers.

Dr Aye Zan was also charged with nine counts of corruption under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law. In connection with this case, plaintiff witnesses are still testifying.

Likewise, ex-Chief Minister of Sagaing Region Dr Myint Naing was sentenced by Monywa Township Court to two years in prison under Section 505 (b).

The court at Monywa Prison sentenced Dr Myint Naing to two years. Besides, another case in which he was charged with seven counts of corruption is being heard at the same court, said a source close to him.  

Among those who served as chief ministers under the National League for Democracy government, ex-Kayin State Chief Minister Daw Nan Khin Htway Myint was sentenced to 77 years in prison, ex-Taninthayi Region Chief Minister U Myint Maung 11 years in prison, ex-Magway Region Chief Minister Dr Aung Moe Nyo four years in prison and ex-Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu two years in prison. They were indicted on various charges.
