EU demands release of all detainees, including President and State Counsellor, for inclusive political dialogue

The European Union (EU) has called for the release of all detainees, including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, to hold an inclusive political dialogue, announced the senior EU envoy on November 8.

The statement said that the people of Myanmar voted in the general election on November 8, 2020. The voice of the people of Myanmar is clear and the will for democracy is strong. A senior EU envoy says the military's takeover from a civilian government on February 1, 2021, is against the will of the people.

As a result of this incident, consequences of humanitarian aid, social and economic are occurred. The EU continues to condemn the actions of the Myanmar Armed Forces and strongly support the people and their choice for democracy.

In addition, the military build-up in central and northwestern Myanmar, including Sagaing and Magway regions, and the escalation of violence, especially in Chin State, are extremely worrying. The EU has strongly condemned the military's attacks on villages in Chin State.

The EU has called for an immediate end to all ongoing violence and the use of force. The statement said military authorities must ensure that humanitarian aid reaches all displaced persons and those in need of immediate, safe and unrestricted access.

The EU commends the continued efforts of ASEAN Special Envoy Erywan Yusof, Brunei's second foreign minister, and ASEAN, which seeks to link a meaningful and inclusive dialogue process involving all parties in Myanmar, and supports further cooperation with the United Nations.
