The Central Bank of Myanmar announced on May 7 that it had reduced the limit on minium cash reservers need to be kept by banks down to 3 percent.

The Central Bank's statement said that the minimum cash reserve was at at least 5 percent before COVID-19 struck, which was then temporarily lowered down to 3.5 percent in 2020 until September 30. It was then extended to September 30 of 2021.

Due to the current situation that the banks are facing, the Central Bank had decided to lower the limit so that they may operate better.

This order is currently due to last the latest by October 21.

If the banks were found to not meet the newly adjusted criteria by then, the Central Bank had said in its statement that fines to be enacted upon the banks will be alleviated depending on each individual bank's state on digital payment, CBM-Net transfers, Cheque Clearing, bank and government bonds and so on.
