Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chairmanship to Myanmar and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhon of Cambodia and his delegation will work for the speedy implementation of a national reconciliation process to resolve internal conflicts during a visit to Myanmar from June 29 to July 3, sources said.

The ASEAN Envoy arrived in Yangon on the afternoon of June 29 via Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The ASEAN Envoy is welcomed by U Zaw Phyo Win, Director-General of the Department of Strategic Studies and Training of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Director General of the Department of Diplomacy U Zaw Tun Oo and officials and Cambodian Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Mr. CHHOUK Bunna and officials from the Embassy at Yangon International Airport.

During the five-day visit of the ASEAN Special Envoy, efforts will be made to implement the outcome of the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Meeting held on 6 May 2022 and the ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, to facilitate inclusive political dialogue through meetings and to implement a peaceful national reconciliation process as soon as possible in the ongoing conflict in Myanmar.

On March 21, the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chairmanship and ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi paid a three-day visit to Myanmar to meet with the Chairman of State Administration Council.

At the meeting, both sides discussed on Myanmar, which was on the path of multi-party democracy since 2010 and the conditions for performing the duties of the State by the State Administration Council in line with the 2008 Constitution, which was approved by a referendum, in the wake of vote rigging in the 2020 multi-party democratic general election, violence erupted through protests sparked by political dissent, extrajudicial killings, destruction and mine attacks on State-owned buildings and schools, and the situation in which the State Administration Council is working to ensure the safety and security of the people.

In addition, they also discussed on the implementation status of the ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, the situation in which humanitarian assistance being provided to the people of Myanmar, issues related to enhancing cooperation in ASEAN and discussions to hold on how to make progress through dialogue as it is the first step in a series of talks.
