Apart from ongoing projects, plans underway to make cross-border purchases to fulfill electricity needs: Union Minister

In order to meet the national requirement of electricity, apart from the present power projects and the solar energy power stations, efforts are being made to purchase electricity from across the border by means of power lines, said Union Minister for Electric Power U Thaung Han.

He revealed the information during a co-ordination meeting held at the office of the Yangon Region Government on August 13 on electricity supply to the industrial zones in Yangon.

The union minister said that the ministry was constructing power stations, high power cable lines and sub-stations so as to enable the people, industrial zones and home industries to enjoy stable supply of electricity, and that in order to fulfill the increasing requirement yearly, apart from the present projects, such as hydropower projects, power stations run by means of solar energy, efforts were underway to purchase electricity from across the border by means of power lines. In addition, he said that various means, including wind power were being used to produce more electricity. Moreover, 500 KVA power line and sub stations projects were underway so as to improve the stable supply and for the power laden cables to carry more power.

The minister further said that plans were underway to fulfill the requirement of electricity by industrial zones and home industries in Yangon Region. Infrastructures were being uplifted to fulfill the requirement by industrial zones. For the development of the country full supply of electricity to the public plays an important role, and the supply of electricity to home industries will enhance the state economy. And so the Union Minister asked industrial entrepreneurs to present the difficulties they were facing so that the ministry can help them.

The meeting was also attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his cabinet members, the chairman of Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation, directors and managing directors from the ministry, Directorate, Enterprises, departmental heads and responsible persons from industrial zones.
