Taking action alone is not enough in fighting corruption, Union Betterment Party (UBP) chairman Thura Shwe Mann has commented.

He made the remark in his interview conducted by The Daily Eleven over the reports that some government ministers were involved in corruption cases that happened under the National League for Democracy government.

"In forming a new government, I would not say I was one of those who chose (government members). But I provided consultation. In connection with corruption cases, they were up to those concerned. The consequences of those cases are not good for individuals, organizations or the country. In fighting corruption, I don't think it will be perfect just taking action. To fight this, there are many other preventive ways," Shwe Mann said.

Shwe Mann served as speaker of the Lower House of Parliament under the Thein Sein government. Under the ruling government also, he served as chairman of the Legal Affairs and Special Cases Assessment Commission until February 2019.

When asked about any comparison between Thein Sein and NLD governments, Shwe Mann said this should be judged by the people only.

"I want to say that the situations in the present government and parliament are not the same as that of ours. As a former parliamentary speaker and an official in the new government, I don't want to say who is better. Public judgment is more appropriate," he commented.

He added that he had normal relations with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. In the party relations, his party is doing in line with its policy to garner public support.

In the upcoming general election in 2020, UBP will compete in over 300 constituencies.
