A moderate quake of magnitude 5.4 Richter Scale hit northeast of Thabeikkyin and residents from Sagaing, Kawlin, Mogok and Mandalay felt the jolt, said locals.

A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.4 Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar (about 23 miles northeast of Thabeikkyin), latitude 23.19°N, longitude 96.11°E, depth 5 kilometers about 38 miles east of Kanbalu seismological observatory was recorded on November 28, 2019, announced the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

The quake is assumed to be started from Sagaing Fault and aftershocks may be followed, said Saw Htwe Zaw, vice president of Myanmar Earthquake Committee.

“It is near the place where Thabeikkyin quake hit in 2012. The depth is shallow and aftershocks may be followed. A quake of magnitude 5.4 Richter Scale hit previously and aftershocks jolted for about six months. Quakes which will be smaller or same size may jolt,” said Saw Htwe Zaw.

Residents from Takaung, Kawlin, Sagaing, Mogok, Kalay, Myitta and Mandalay in addition to Thabeikkyin felt it and Kyarnyet Village in Thabeikkyin Township had damages, said MP Soe Lwin of No.1 Thabeikkyin Constituency.

“There are damages in Kyarnyet Village and one student is fainted. We are waiting for more information,” said the MP.

A slight earthquake of magnitude 3.5 Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar (about 21 miles west of Mawlaik), also hit on November 28, announced the DMH.

A strong quake of 6.8 Richter Scale hit near Thabeikkyin on November 11, 2012 damaging houses in Shwebo, Wutlet, Khin-U, Kantbalu and Sagaing and it killed seven people and injured 32. A total of 675 houses, 40 government-owned buildings, 101 school buildings, 12 hospitals and clinics, 223 religious buildings, 304 pagodas and eight state owned and private owned buildings were damaged in the quake and the estimated loss was about Ks1.413 billion.
