2,579 villages to receive electricity in Phase 2 of NEP

A total of 2,579 villages from all states and regions will gain access to national grid in line with Phase 2 of National Electrification Project (NEP) and among them, the number of villages from Bago Region (West) is the highest with 785 villages, according to Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The number of villages gained access to national grid in states and regions are as per following: 867 households from 13 villages in Chin State, 68,612 households from 559 villages in Sagaing Region, 78,088 households from 576 villages in Bago Region (East), 81,751 households from 785 villages in Bago Region (West), 52,829 households from 386 villages in Magway Region, 9,628 households from 42 villages in Mon State, 2,978 households from 17 villages in Rakhine State and 14,724 households from 201 villages in Shan State (South).

The ministry is implemented to provide electricity in 5,080 villages in accord with the first phase of the NEP, which is implemented with US$310 million loan from the World Bank and construction works are finished in 1,891 villages. 1,091 out of 1,891 villages have gained access to national grid, said Win Khaing, Union Minister for Electricity and Energy.

About 626,757 households from 5,080 villages will gain access to the national grid in the first phase and the ministry is planning to provide electricity for 4,700 villages in second phase.

It will be the first tender bid to buy transformers, concrete posts and accessories under the regulations of World Bank.

National grid provided electricity to 5,066,842 households till August 2019, taking the electrification rate of the country to 46.58 per cent.
