Myanmar to launch heart disease risk assessment and treatment program for 100,000 people

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to implement a heart disease risk assessment and treatment program in Nay Pyi Daw, Yangon, and Mandalay, in collaboration with China, targeting a total of 100,000 people.

Union Minister for Health, Dr. Thet Khaing Win, made the announcement during a meeting held on April 23 at the Ministry of Health. The meeting was attended by rectors, professors, department heads from medical and related universities, as well as officials responsible for healthcare services and medical education.

During the meeting, the Union Minister outlined directives from the President, emphasizing that the education and health sectors will be prioritized as key foundations for the country’s future development. He stressed that healthcare policies must be effective and directly benefit the public, with a strong focus on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to ensure accessible healthcare for all.

As part of a 100-day plan, the ministry will introduce the heart disease risk assessment and treatment program in major cities in partnership with China. In addition, public health awareness campaigns will be expanded in stable and peaceful rural areas.

The minister also announced plans to upgrade 15 nursing training schools across Nay Pyi Daw and 14 states and regions into nursing institutes. Efforts will be intensified to expand free healthcare services for civil servants and retired government employees at public hospitals.

Regarding postgraduate medical education, the minister highlighted the importance of producing highly qualified specialists with strong ethical standards, loyalty to the country, and a commitment to serving the public. He urged university leaders and healthcare professionals to serve as role models not only in teaching but also in clinical practice.

Then, the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee (1/2026) meeting continued, and the Union Minister said that the admission requirements for postgraduate medical courses to be opened in medical universities and medical-related universities in the academic year (2027), the maximum number of students that can be accepted by each university, and the "rule" for determining the score for the interview will be discussed in detail, and that the decisions that emerged from today's meeting will be implemented.
