Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport will allow the re-registration of motor vehicles and motorcycles in Kayah State whose registrations expired more than five years ago, provided owners submit valid ownership and residency documents, Deputy Minister U Tun Lu told Parliament on July 27.

Responding to a question raised by Daw Maw Maw Khaing, MP for Demoso Township, on behalf of Loikaw MP U Maung Shwe, the deputy minister said the measure aims to prevent hardship for residents affected by conflict and transport disruptions since 2021.

Under the 2020 Vehicle Safety and Motor Vehicle Management Law, registrations that remain unrenewed for five consecutive years are normally cancelled. However, authorities will make an exception for Kayah State if applicants provide proof of ownership, including vehicle registration documents, certificates and a recommendation letter from the local ward administration office in the area where they were displaced.

The ministry said the policy applies to vehicles with registrations expired for more than five years. It also announced a special arrangement for vehicles that have not yet reached the five-year limit, allowing township committees to submit renewal applications in bulk to the Loikaw transport office, where renewals can be processed without requiring vehicle inspections in exceptional cases.
