A lawmaker has accused local administrators in Hkamti Township, Sagaing Region, of carrying out forced arrests for military conscription in violation of the People’s Military Service Law and its bylaws.

Speaking during the 27th day of the second regular session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw on July 22, Hkamti MP U Gon Wan said authorities were detaining people on streets, at town checkpoints and inside homes, with some students reportedly among those arrested.

He said Hkamti’s weekly recruitment quota is six people, but alleged the number of arrests had exceeded that limit, raising concerns over possible irregularities. The MP also claimed the arrests had left many young men afraid to remain in the town and created difficulties for patients traveling to hospitals, as their caregivers also feared being detained.

Responding to the question, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Maj-Gen Min Thu said recruitment committees were required to follow the law and were being monitored to prevent unlawful conscription. He added that authorities would take action against anyone found exceeding their legal authority.
