Myanmar and Laos Military Officials Discuss Enhancing Border Security and Mekong River Cooperation

Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Ye Win Oo received a delegation led by Major General Vanhthong Boudtavong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Lao People's Armed Forces, at the Zeyathiri Beikman Hall in Nay Pyi Taw on the morning of June 9, according to reports.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed measures to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Myanmar and Laos as well as between their respective armed forces. They also reviewed the positive progress in bilateral diplomatic and military relations and cooperation among ASEAN member states.

The discussions covered cooperation within regional frameworks, including the Cambodia–Laos–Myanmar–Vietnam (CLMV) grouping, the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), and the Ayeyawady–Chao Phraya–Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), where both countries work closely together on regional development initiatives.

The officials also exchanged views on expanding military-to-military cooperation through goodwill visits, cultural and sports exchanges, and training programs. In addition, they discussed strengthening security and stability along the Myanmar–Laos border and enhancing cooperation on Mekong River security.

The Myanmar side also expressed gratitude to Laos for its humanitarian assistance following the major Mandalay earthquake of March 28, 2025, including the deployment of rescue teams and the provision of relief supplies.

According to reports, discussions further touched on Myanmar’s efforts to maintain friendly relations with neighboring countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, recent national developments, and the activities of the democratically elected government in implementing the will of the people. The meeting also reviewed positive developments in the country's progress, Myanmar’s active and non-aligned foreign policy, and its engagement with neighboring countries, ASEAN members, and the broader international community.

The Myanmar side additionally highlighted the role of the Tatmadaw in safeguarding the country's three main national causes under the leadership of the government.

Attending the meeting alongside General Ye Win Oo were Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Htein Win and senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief. The Lao delegation included Colonel Mixay Phengsavath, Deputy Director of the International Relations Department of the Lao People's Armed Forces, Colonel Viphaxay Chanthamath, Lao Military Attaché to Myanmar, and other officials.
