Thai police have arrested four Chinese nationals and a driver in Kanchanaburi Province after discovering more than 80 iPhones allegedly being transported to online scam centers in Myanmar’s Phayathonezu area, according to Thai media reports.
The arrests were made on June 5 during a security patrol along the bypass road in Pak Phraek area of Kanchanaburi City. Police became suspicious after spotting people transferring passengers and items from a taxi to another vehicle in an alley in Kaeng Sian Ward.
Officers searched the vehicle and found a 34-year-old Mon driver along with four Chinese nationals. Three of the Chinese nationals reportedly had no identification documents, while the fourth possessed an expired passport visa.
Police later discovered 77 new iPhones hidden inside a black bag in the vehicle. Together with four additional iPhones carried by the suspects, authorities seized a total of 81 phones as evidence.
During questioning through an interpreter, the suspects reportedly admitted they had illegally entered Thailand from Cambodia and were heading to scam centers in Myanmar’s Phayathonezu area. The iPhones were allegedly intended for use at the scam compounds.
The driver also reportedly confessed that he was paid 2,000 baht to transport the group to a designated location.
All five suspects have been transferred to Kanchanaburi police station for further investigation, while Thai authorities continue efforts to identify other people connected to the case.
