Low-Pressure Areas Expected Twice in Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea During Mid-May, One May Intensify Into Depression

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has announced that two low-pressure areas may form over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal during the second 10-day period of May, with one system likely to intensify into a depression.

According to the DMH’s weather and hydrological forecast for the second 10-day period of May, the southwest monsoon is expected to enter southern parts of Myanmar between May 13 and 17, and the delta regions between May 18 and 22.

The department stated that two low-pressure areas could develop over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, with one of them potentially strengthening into a depression. During this period, the southwest monsoon is expected to be moderate. The Andaman Sea and the southern Bay of Bengal are likely to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, while the remaining areas of the Bay of Bengal may see partly cloudy weather.

Regarding rainfall conditions, above-normal rainfall is expected in Naypyidaw, Yangon Region, Mandalay Region, Bago Region, and Ayeyarwady Region. Meanwhile, near-normal rainfall with scattered thunderstorms is forecast for Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and Shan State

In terms of rainy days, Yangon Region, Bago Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayin State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and northern and eastern Shan State are expected to receive thunderstorms on about six to eight days. Naypyidaw, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, lower Sagaing Region, Kayah State, and southern Shan State may experience thunderstorms on about three to five days.

Daytime temperatures in Mandalay Region, Magway Region, and southern Shan State are expected to be at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above the average May temperature. In Naypyidaw, Yangon Region, Bago Region, Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and northern and eastern Shan State, temperatures are expected to remain close to the average May levels.
