Yangon Region recorded 2,477 fire incidents between 2016 and 2025, causing losses exceeding Ks118 billion, according to Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu.

Speaking at the 80th anniversary ceremony of the Myanmar Fire Services Department on May 5 in Yangon, he said rapid urban and industrial growth has increased fire risks. On average, the region saw about 247 fires and roughly Ks11 billion in damages each year.

He noted a slight decline in recent years, with 241 fires in 2024 and 227 in 2025, crediting improved prevention efforts by firefighters and volunteer units.

The Chief Minister also emphasized that modern fire services now go beyond firefighting, taking on rescue operations, disaster management, and emergency response. He urged continued public awareness of fire safety standards, particularly for high-rise buildings, factories, hotels, shopping centres, and small and medium-sized businesses.
