Authorities in Mandalay are installing shade shelters at traffic lights to help prevent heat-related deaths amid rising temperatures.
The installations began on April 23 at busy intersections where pedestrians and commuters are exposed to extreme heat. The move follows reports of several heatstroke cases as temperatures continue to climb.
When contacted, the Region’s Minister for Social Affairs said, “So far, we have confirmed that one doctor has died from heatstroke. We have not received reports of other cases yet.”
In March, temperatures had already surged, and fuel shortages forced people to queue for long hours at petrol stations. During one such incident, a woman reportedly died from heatstroke while waiting in line.
Due to the ongoing heatwave, the Mandalay City Development Committee is carrying out the project to provide relief for the public at major junctions.
So far, shelters have been installed at intersections including 26th Street and 73rd Street, 26th Street and 80th Street, 30th Street and 73rd Street, and 35th Street and 78th Street. More installations are planned for other locations, according to the Roads, Bridges and Buildings Department.
