Independent candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, Daw Sandar Min and U Win Myint Than, held a campaign event on December 2 in Lanmadaw Township, Yangon Region.
During the campaign, the two candidates distributed election pamphlets inside D-Hall and E-Hall of Theingyi Market ( Surati Bazaar) and encouraged the public to vote in the elections.
Since many vendors and workers in the market come from other townships, the candidates also urged eligible voters to cast ballots in their respective home constituencies.
Daw Sandar Min, the independent candidate for the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), said: “We distributed pamphlets to all shops. Most people here told us they originally come from Pabedan Township and run shops in Lanmadaw. Some also live in Lanmadaw. No matter where they live, we handed out pamphlets to raise awareness so they can vote. We also explained that residents of Lanmadaw can vote in Lanmadaw, and residents of Pabedan must vote for candidates in Pabedan — we are helping spread that understanding.”
She added that the security situation in Lanmadaw Township is currently stable, and they faced no difficulties campaigning. However, she noted that some voters still believe “nothing will happen if they don’t vote,” while others expressed willingness to vote after receiving campaign materials. She reminded the public that voting is a personal civic right, and not voting means losing the chance to elect preferred representatives or leaders.
She further stated: “Every citizen has a choice — governments they like and governments they don’t. That choice exists only through voting. Thinking that one vote doesn’t matter is wrong. Now there is only one month left until people start voting — awareness is slowly rising. So I sincerely ask not only Lanmadaw residents but all eligible citizens nationwide: please vote effectively on election day and don’t forfeit your rights.”
The first phase of the 2025 General Election will be held on December 28, while the Lanmadaw constituency falls under Phase (2), scheduled for January 11, 2026.
Daw Sandar Min is a former central committee member of National League for Democracy. She previously served as a Pyithu Hluttaw representative for Zabu Thiri Township after winning the 2012 by-election, and from 2012 to 2015 she worked on the Economic and Investment Committee. She was later elected as a regional MP for Seikkyi Kanaungto Township in the 2015 General Election, and served from 2015 to 2020 as Chair of the Finance, Planning and Economic Committee of Yangon Region.
U Win Myint Than is an engineering expert who served from 2018 to 2020 as a member of the Yangon City Development Committee, and was one of the lead managers for the underground pedestrian tunnel project built in front of TTC School – Pyay Road in Yangon.
