According to the Myanmar Gazette, Myanmar and Thailand have established a Joint Border Committee to address matters related to boundary demarcation, river navigation, and the use of river water between the two countries.
The committee will be chaired by the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Director General of the Border Affairs Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Political and Legal Affairs Bureau will serve as secretary.
The committee will consist of 17 members, including the Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand, a commander from the Navy Hydrographic Department under the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), and the Director General from the General Administration Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Myanmar–Thailand Joint Border Committee is tasked with identifying ways to reach basic bilateral agreements between the two countries on border demarcation, the use of river water, and river navigation. It will also establish procedures to guide negotiations with the Thai government delegation, with the goal of achieving mutual agreements on boundary marking, water usage, and navigation along shared rivers.
Additionally, the committee will handle the full range of responsibilities needed to draft and conclude border agreements between Myanmar and Thailand, including all matters related to boundary surveying and demarcation.
