The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a special weather bulletin warning that, due to the potential strengthening of monsoon winds over the Bay of Bengal from August 13 to 17, heavy rainfall may occur in some areas of regions and states.

It said that the strengthening of monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, as well as atmospheric instability over the Bay of Bengal, may cause scattered heavy rain in the Mandalay Region, Magway Region, southern Sagaing Region, Kayah State, and Chin State. Widespread heavy rain is also likely in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, Bago Region, northern Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and Shan State during this period.

Along Myanmar’s coastal areas and offshore waters, occasional squalls and rough seas are expected. During squalls, surface winds may reach 30–35 miles per hour, and waves may reach heights of 9–11 feet along coastal areas and offshore.

The department warned that these conditions could bring natural hazards such as strong winds, torrential rain, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail, flash floods, and landslides. People living in hilly areas should be alert to landslide risks, while those near small rivers and streams should watch out for floods and inundation. Inland water transport, aviation, and dam authorities are advised to take necessary precautionary measures in advance.
