Speedboat operators said water travel is becoming increasingly popular along the Tanintharyi coast, leading to a rise in the number of vessels operating in the area.
Weekly speedboat services connecting Kawthoung, Myeik, and Dawei began in the third week of April. Two vessels—Express 555 and Express 999—have been deployed, with Express 999 running between Myeik and Dawei, and Express 555 operating between Myeik and Kawthoung.
U Moe Zaw, who oversees the express boat line, said the services were launched to meet growing demand, with passenger safety as the top priority. He noted that trips will be scheduled once a week depending on tidal conditions, especially as the rainy season approaches.
Fares are set at 200,000 kyats per passenger for the Myeik–Dawei route and 300,000 kyats for Myeik–Kawthoung. Travel times are approximately five hours and six hours, respectively, allowing for same-day journeys.
Operators added that despite higher costs compared to land travel, more passengers are choosing water routes due to shorter travel times and safety concerns, as sections of the Myeik–Dawei–Yangon Union Highway are frequently closed.
