U Thaw Phyo Shwe, a researcher on earthquakes with BANCA, has emphasized the need for special attention to earthquake preparedness in 2025, particularly in the Sagaing Region, Shan State, Bago Region, and Yangon Region.

In 2024, Myanmar experienced 523 earthquakes, including a notable earthquake on April 5 near Myitkyina, Kachin State, which measured 5.8 in magnitude. The tremors were felt up to 80 miles away, but fortunately, there was no significant damage, according to U Thaw Phyo Shwe.

He added, “In 2025, it is crucial to remain vigilant, especially in the regions of Sagaing, Shan, Bago, and Yangon, as earthquakes can occur without warning. Early preparation and awareness, particularly in earthquake-prone areas, are essential for minimizing risk.

On November 20, 2024, at 5:48:30 PM, a moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, 42 miles west of the Kabar Aye Seismological Station, near Kyaiklat town in Pyapon District, Ayeyarwady Region. According to a press release from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the quake was felt in several townships, including Kyaiklat, Pyapon, Einme, Pantanaw, Wakhema, Pathein, Myaungmya, and Bogalay. It was also felt in parts of Yangon Region, including Kawhmu, Hlaing, Sanchaung, and Thakayta, where some religious structures and homes sustained damage.

Furthermore, 22 earthquakes were recorded in Myanmar in January 2025, including a moderate 5.1 magnitude quake in Khanti District, Sagaing Region, on January 24 at around 2 a.m.

The most devastating earthquake in Myanmar’s history occurred on May 5, 1930, in Bago, also known as the Swa earthquake. It had a magnitude between 7.3 and 7.5, causing significant damage.
