The Tanintharyi River has fallen slightly below the danger level, but schools remain closed and travel on the Union Highway is still not possible.

According to measurements taken on the morning of September 4, the Tanintharyi River stood at 23 feet 7 inches above its normal water level, which is 5 inches below the danger level of 24 feet.

“Rainfall has eased slightly, and rainfall in the upper reaches of the river is expected to decrease. If the sea tide pulls the water back toward the Myeik side, the river level will fall. For now, schools remain closed. The Tanintharyi–Bokpyin section of the Union Highway is still flooded, so travel is not yet possible,” a local resident said.

Flooding of the Tanintharyi River has forced 17 schools to close, while 10 relief camps have been opened and thousands of people have been affected by the flooding.

The Tanintharyi River reached the warning level of 17 feet on August 14 and rose above the danger level of 24 feet on August 30.

Due to the flooding, the Tanintharyi–Bokpyin section of the Yangon–Myeik–Kawthoung Union Highway became impassable on September 1, and the road closure has continued for four days.

The warning level for the Tanintharyi River is set at 17 feet, while the danger level is 24 feet.
