Myanmar is currently implementing 11 hybrid and solar power generation projects, according to Admiral Tin Aung San, Chairman of the Electric Powerand Energy Development Commission. He also serves as a member of the State Administration Council, Deputy Prime Minister, and Union Minister at the Prime Minister Office.
The update was provided during a coordination meeting held on January 30 at the State Administration Council office in Nay Pyi Taw. The meeting focused on the progress of ongoing solar power plant projects.
Of the 11 projects, nine are dedicated solar power plants, while two will integrate gas engine and solar power systems under a hybrid model. The solar power plants are being developed in various regions, with four in the Nay Pyi Taw, three in Mandalay Region, one in Bago Region, and one in Shan State. These solar plants will have a combined installed capacity of 530 megawatts.
Meanwhile, the two hybrid projects—combining gas engines and solar power—are being constructed in Mandalay and Magway regions, with a total installed capacity of 496 megawatts.
Altogether, the solar and hybrid power projects under development will contribute a combined capacity of 1,026 megawatts to Myanmar’s electricity grid. The Energy Commission Chairman emphasized the need to accelerate ground-level construction activities to ensure timely project completion.
The current electricity generation capacity of the nation includes 28 hydroelectric power plants, 27 thermal power plants, and 8 solar power plants, with a total installed capacity of 6,371 megawatts.
However, due to damage from natural disasters and the destruction of power lines, 12 of these plants are currently producing less electricity, and the demand for electricity in the country is increasing. As a result, there is a need to rapidly implement plans for renewable energy (RE) to meet the growing electricity demand.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman of Electricity and Energy Development Commission, SAC member, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister at the office of Prime Minister Admiral Tin Aung San, SAC member, Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Foreign Exchange General Nyo Saw, Vice Chairman (1) of the Commission Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun, Deputy Ministers, departmental officials and the officials concerned from the companies implementing Solar Powered Electricity Power Plant Projects.
