On July 31, 2024, the National Defence and Security Council of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held its 2/2024 meeting at the Office of the State Administration Council Chairman in Nay Pyi Taw.
Due to Pro Tem President U Myint Swe's medical leave for health reasons, the duties of the Pro Tem President have been temporarily assumed by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who attended the meeting in his acting capacity, emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to holding elections, affirming that preparations for the election are ongoing and will be pursued with determination.
The meeting was attended by Pro Tem President (Duty) Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Holding the election is a government’s vision which never changes. Hence, preparations are ongoing to hold an election. The Senior General reaffirmed that he will implement the vision to achieve success. Hlaing, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw U T Khun Myat, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Union Minister for Defence Admiral Tin Aung San, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, specially invited SAC Secretary Lt-Gen Aung Lin Dwe and Joint Secretary LtGen Ye Win Oo.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing outlined the council’s focus on ensuring peace and stability, addressing the economic decline, and promoting various sectors such as education, agriculture, and health care. The council aims to conduct a free and fair multi-party democratic election as soon as conditions allow, despite previous delays caused by unrest and violence. The meeting also addressed the need for building a democratic and federal union, and implementing a comprehensive population and household census.
The Commander-in-Chief addressed the need to uphold peace and stability in response to disruptions caused by the National Unity Government (NUG), People's Defense Forces (PDF), and various ethnic armed groups. He emphasized that, in accordance with Article 425 of the Constitution, an extension of the Acting President's term by six months is necessary to complete the population and household census.
Following this, the National Defence and Security Council, along with special invitees, engaged in a roundtable discussion. Subsequently, the council unanimously decided to extend the state of emergency by an additional six months, as stipulated by Article 425 of the 2008 Constitution.
