At around 2 AM on July 14, in Laukkai, following an airstrike by the military, the MNDAA announced a four-day ceasefire, citing respect and concern for the Chinese Communist Party's conference.
In a statement released in the Chinese lanugage, it was noted that in honor and respect of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee meeting, the MNDAA would halt its military operations from 12 AM on July 14 to 12 AM on July 18.
The statement mentioned that they would cease their offensive operations but would prepare defensive measures, reserving the right to retaliate if attacked. The ceasefire was attributed to the Chinese Communist Party's 20th Central Committee's third meeting, scheduled from July 15 to 18.
Since October 27, 2023, the three northern allies launched Operation 1027, targeting security outposts in northern Shan State, leading to various battles. China's intervention urged both sides to cease hostilities and engage in dialogue, resulting in a ceasefire agreement in January 2024.
However, by late June, the MNDAA resumed their operations, attacking near Lashio, while the TNLA engaged in conflicts around Mogok, Nawngkhio, and Hsipaw. Joint forces including the Mandalay People's Defense Force (MDY PDF) attacked in Mattaya and Singu, clashing with the military.
The recent ceasefire announcement by the MNDAA follows ongoing clashes near Lashio since July 3, with numerous civilian casualties and damage due to rocket fire. As a result, over half of the city's residents fled, leaving the city in thousands of vehicles.
During this conflict, the military's airstrike on Laukkai was followed by the MNDAA's ceasefire declaration, reflecting respect and concern for the Chinese Communist Party's conference.
"After the airstrike on Laukkai last night, the ceasefire announcement came today. This is unlike previous negotiations where both sides agreed to ceasefire after talks. Currently, SSPP and UWSA are also stationed in Tangyan and Mongyal, collaborating with the military for security. Given the MNDAA's logistical challenges, it's necessary for the military to take the lead and respond appropriately. Their attacks on Lashio have caused significant civilian casualties and damage, so the military should take decisive action to prevent future occurrences," remarked a local resident observing the situation.
The MNDAA's assaults near Lashio have caused extensive suffering among the residents. TNLA's Operation 1027 Phase II has led to attacks in Kyaukme and Nawngkhio, resulting in numerous deaths and displacements.
During Operation 1027, the MNDAA captured Laukkai, destroying a Buddhist stupa on Point 2202 (Sin-U Kin Hill) and shared the act on social media.
Additionally, they demolished buildings in the Bamar community in Laukkai in March 2024, which housed many Bamar people-owned businesses.
The MNDAA has restricted the movement of Bamar people into Laukkai and nearby areas like Chinshwehaw, Hsenwi, Kutkai, and Kunlon, limiting access for Bamar drivers.
