Heavy rains may occur in places in Ayeyawady Region and Rakhine State on May 31 due to strong monsoon winds in the Andaman Sea and the southern Bay of Bengal, according to the forecast made by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) on May 31.

Monsoon is strong over the Andaman Sea and South Bay of Bengal. Weather is a few cloud over the West-central Bay and partly cloudy to cloudy elsewhere over the Bay of Bengal.

Rain or thundershowers will be widespread in Ayeyawady, Taninthayi regions and Rakhine, Kayin, Mon states, fairly widespread in Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Yangon regions and Southern Shan, Chin states, scattered in Mandalay, Magway regions and Eastern Shan, Kayah states and isolated in the remaining regions and states with likelihood of isolated heavy falls in Ayeyawady Region and Rakhine State. Degree of certainty is 100%.

The cumulonimbus clouds are developing over the Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady, Taninthayi regions and Southern and Eastern Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayah, Kayin, Mon states. The area along the cumulonimbus clouds movement, the weather phenomena such as strong winds accompanied with rain, thunder, lightning and hail may occur and therefore it is recommended to be aware in advance these phenomena.

Squall with rough seas are likely at times along Myanmar Coasts and offshore sea. Surface wind speed in squall may reach from 30 to 35 mph. Wave height will be about 6 feet to 9 feet along Myanmar Coasts and offshore sea.

During the past 24 hours, southwest monsoon has advanced into the Deltaic Myanmar areas and Southwest Bay of Bengal. Rain or thundershowers have been widespread in Taninthayi Region and Mon State, fairly widespread in Chin, Rakhine, Kayin states, scattered in Bago, Ayeyawady regions and Southern Shan State and isolated in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Magway, Yangon regions and Eastern Shan State with isolated heavy falls in Chin State and weather has been partly cloudy in the remaining regions and states.

Day temperatures were 5°C to 6°C above May average temperatures in upper Sagaing Region and Kachin, Northern and Eastern Shan states, 3°C to 4°C above May average temperatures in Nay Pyi Taw, lower Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago regions and Southern Shan, Chin, Kayah states and 2°C above May average temperatures in Yangon, Ayeyawady regions and Rakhine, Kayin states and about May average temperatures in the remaining regions and states.

The significant day temperatures were 42°C each in Hkamti, Tamu, Myinmu and Chauk and 41°C each in Myitkyina, Kalewa, Myingyan and Hpasaung.

The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were 3.78 inches in Tiddim, 2.95 inches in Kya-In-Seikkyi, 2.20 inches in Labutta, 1.93 inches in Taungkok, 1.30 inches in Kawkareik, 1.14 inches in Kawthoung, 1.02 inches in Chauk and 0.75 inch each in Ye and Mudon.
