A low pressure area passing over Deltaic areas still persists and due to that low pressure area, there may be heavy rain in Yangon, Bago and Ayeyawaddy Region within three days.
“The low pressure area may still persist in Deltaic areas till October 23 and it will gradually weaken,” said Dr.Kyaw Moe Oo, Director-General of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).
Due to the low pressure area over Deltaic areas, Yangon, Bago and Ayeyawaddy Region got the heaviest rain on October 22 morning. Occasional squalls with rough seas will be experienced off and along Myanmar Coasts. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach 25 m.p.h to 40 m.p.h and wave height will be about 9 to 12 feet high off and along Myanmar coasts according to Dr.Kyaw Moe Oo.
Due to that small scale storm, heavy rain occurred in Yangon Region since October 21 evening and continued the next day. As a result, flooding occurred in some townships in Yangon such as Insein, Mayangone, and south Okkalapa.
Heavy rain on October 21 evening caused flooding in Insein Townships, water entered houses and electricity shortage broke out.
“Since 3:30 am, water entered houses in the street. As the electricity shortage occurs at that time, we couldn’t able to cook our meals. Flooding occurred every year. No authority come and inspected it. If upgrading of roads carried out, I think, flooding will reduce,” said Aye Aye Khine, from U Tun Sein Kone Street in Insein Taung Thu Gone ward.
Heavy rain on that day also ruined Yegyaw Thadingyut Festival. Stalls along Yegyaw Street are closed earlier and some entertainment programmes were also cancelled. Vendors at the Yegyaw Thadingyut Festival are worried over facing losses if the rains continue in the festival period which is till October 25th.
