YANGON- The Embassy of the United Kingdom in Myanmar released a statement on by its Ambassador on September 7th, which calls on all parties to engage in dialogue and supports peaceful efforts to restore democracy in Myanmar.
Mr. Pete Vowles, who was only recently appointed as U.K. Ambassador to Myanmar in July 2021, wrote on his Twitter account that additional violence will ‘harm vulnerable communities & risks COVID-19/ humanitarian aid.’ Mr. Vowles also condemned the military takeover and brutality of the ruling military.
On the morning of September 7th, the president of the National Unity Government (NUG), opponents of the ruling military, called for a revolt against military rule, laying out a strategy that included action by armed militias and ethnic forces and urging bureaucrats to leave their posts.
The Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) has been leading diplomatic efforts to end the violence and open a dialogue between the military rulers and their opponents.
Asean’s envoy to Myanmar, Dato Erywan Yusof, said in an interview with Kyodo news agency that the military had accepted his proposal for a ceasefire until the end of the year to ensure distribution of humanitarian aid.
