The Food & Drugs Adminstration (FDA)'s former Director General Dr Than Htut was sentenced by the Mandalay Region Court to four years in prison under Section 56 for corruption.

The case started on 27 April, 2018 under anti-corruption laws and after a lengthy investigation, the court officially charged him with Section 56 and sentencing him on February 4.

Appeals have been made from the plaintiff's lawyer for additional charges to be placed, of which different levels of courts up the ladder denied.

"I am innocent. I served the country for 40 yaers. I have nothing to say about the court's sentence and due process. I am religious. I take this as karma. I will proceed as per the laws and I will win in the end," said Dr Than Htut to the media.

Dr Than Htut was sued at the Zabbuthiri Township's Myoma Police Station for allegedly embazzling 150 million Kyats worth during his service under the Ministry of Health and Sports (MOHS), at the FDA.

The anti-corruption commission said that a total of 151479786 Kyats were misappropriated by Dr Than Htut, as evident from projects under the MOHS. The commission claims that Dr Than Htut used his authority to request a tender winning company to buy accessories for his house, putting up a fence on his privately owned land as well as building a one storied house, 1 two-storied house with two car garages, a gate house, a swimming pool and a water fountain.
