Flag hoisting ceremony in honor of Karen New Year Day held

To commemorate the 2760th Kayin New Year Day, Kayin National flag hoisting and saluting ceremony was held at the compound of Maha Say Winkabar Arlein Hga Sint in Insein Township on the morning of January 13.

In the past, Kayin New Year Day were celebrated in a grand scale across the entire Myanmar but this year, due to COVID-19 pandemic, only the flag hoisting and saluting ceremony was held. 

Kayin is one of the major ethnic groups in Myanmar. Kayin New Year has been a public holiday in Myanmar since 2009 but, it has been celebrated since 1938. One of the traditions of Kayin New Year is consuming steamed, sticky rice with fried vegetables to celebrate new harvest. Another prominent thing among Kayin people is wearing traditional costumes, consisting of woven tunics pulled over and red longyis. They then visit friends and families and greeted and have a hearty launch. Before COVID-19 pandemic, dancing contests, songs competing and climbing of slippery poles were held.
