As part of election campaigning, more than 1,000 supporters of the National League for Democracy went round in procession by car, motorbike and Htawlagyi (Myanmar-made vehicle used for farming) in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region, on October 4.
The procession lasted from 10 am to 5 pm.
“We went round in the town in support of the NLD. We were also joined by more people from the villages. We have over 1,000,” said NLD supporter Ye Min Tun.
As Covid-19 cases increase in some townships of Mandalay District, the state-at-home order is being imposed with movement restriction in Chanayethazan, Mahaaungmyay and Amarapura townships. The political parties in those townships have halted their canvassing.
The Mandalay Region NLD has requested the public members to avoid gatherings and the Covid-19 rules and guidelines as Myanmar is the second wave of Covid-19 and has seen over 16,000 cases.
The NLD Central Committee for Election Victory also issued a letter of request on October 3 saying that the party is happy with and grateful for such a tremendous support of people. But, large processions with the use of various vehicles could form large gatherings and breach the rules and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports resulting in public criticism.
Therefore, the committee urges the people to suspend large gatherings and processions in support of the NLD, the letter said.
