The State has allotted Ks267 billion again for prevention, control and treatment of Covid-19, said officials from the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The information was disclosed in response to the media question during a press briefing on the ministry’s activities in the fourth year of the government’s term held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 22.

Healthcare expenses for Covid-19 are being covered by international financial aid and State budget. And the government allotted additional Ks267 billion about four days ago, said Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe.

Deputy Minister Dr Mya Lay Sein said: “The State has allotted Ks267 billion again for us to continue fighting Covid-19. This budget also covers economic impact recovery project and purchase of medical equipment, extension of hospital ICUs and laboratories. We will report to the economic committee this week. After the government’s decision, we will buy necessary equipment.”

Dr Thet Khaing Win, permanent secretary of the ministry, said the ministry had been spending its budget since the outbreak of Covid-19. Then, it was spending Ks300 million from the emergency budget and aid donated by public well-wishers. Plans are also being made to loan US$30 million from ADB and US$50 million from the World Bank, he added.

Minister Dr Myint Htwe said: “The Health and Sports Ministry had no history of seeking loans. Loans were sought in 2015. The amount was 100 million. It was before the time of this government. Under the present government, US$30 million is to be loaned from ADB to upgrade hospitals in remote areas. Then, US$50 million will be loaned from the World Bank. This is the first time we plan to loan in 50 years. The State Counsellor has instructed us to spend the money considerably. Ours is not a rich country. We have to repay.”
