Yangon residents are needed to be careful of flash flooding due to strong monsoon season, clouds remained from a storm in South China Sea and high tide in the region, said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“A small storm is forming in South China Sea and the clouds remained from the storm may reach Myanmar within a day or two after crossing Vietnam and Thailand. Lower areas of Myanmar may have more rain. More rain may pour on August 3,” said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo.

Water level may increase as heavy rain may pour at the time of high tide. It is usually occurred annually at the time of high tide. High tide is occurred twice a day, he said.

“Yangon residents need to be careful of floods as a low pressure area may form in Bay of Bengal on July 31 or in early August. Monsoon season will be strong in northern parts of Rakhine State,” he said.

Authorities alerted people in some townships to prepare for high tide as high tide of Yangon River is expected to reach 22 feet high above sea level.

The high tide may occur from July 31 to August 4 and it is expected to reach 22 feet high above the sea level, said MP Thet Htar Nwe Win of No.2 Thaketa Constituency.

“The floods usually occurred wards along Ngamoeyeik creep and it is expected to reach five inches more than last year high tide. So we expected the flood may cover streets. We alerted people to move their valuable things and drinking water. High tide was reached 20 feet high above sea level last year and it will be 22.5 feet high above sea level,” she said.

Floodwater covered houses in Thingangyun, Dawbon, Botahtaung, Lanmadaw, Dagon Seikkan, North Dagon, North Oakkalapa, Kyimyindaing, Thaketa and South Oakkalapa townships due to high tide occurred on August 12, 2018.
