Villagers have built an embankment as Gatone creek in Maingnaung village, Indawgyi Region, Kachin State, dries and silts up day by day.

More than 100 villagers voluntarily built the embankment on September 7 with bamboos and woods obtained from the local area, according to villager U Soe.

“We’ve completed over 2 furlongs till now. Flooding in last July was ten times worse than that of the previous years. The school wall collapsed and the village was flooded. The flooding reached five feet. The river is higher than the village,” said U Soe.

Gatone creek flows Indawgyi Lake. The creek is drying up due to gold digging. At present, there is still little gold digging at the entrance of the creek, according to locals.
