Van carrying Myanmar and Cambodia migrant workers crashed in Thailand killing 8 people

A van carrying Myanmar and Cambodia migrant workers heading to Chanthaburi province for renewal of their migrant workers cards crashed on April 8, killing 8 people on board.

Migrant Time daily quoted U Moe Gyoe, chair of Mae Sot based Joint Action Committee of Burmese Affairs - JACBA as saying. There were 12 passengers on the vehicle and eight people including a pregnant woman were killed, according to U Moe Gyoe.

According to the news media of Thailand, the van rammed into the back of a truck on Pattaya inbound lane in Nong Khang Khok of Chon Buri district  about 5:00 am on April 8. According to the police investigation, the van was carrying 12 migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar. They had hired the van to Chanthaburi province for the renewal of their migrant workers cards.

Four passengers including a pregnant worker were killed on the spot and the five seriously injured were sent to Chon Buri Hospital. But, four more migrant workers sent to Chon Buri Hospital were also killed according to one of the news media in Thailand.

Thai authority is still investigating the number of migrant workers on the van before the crash.  According to Thailand’s law, funeral expenses of Baht 20,000 and life insurance of Baht 500,000 will be given if the migrant workers have full documents.
