The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that due to atmospheric instability in the Bay of Bengal and the possible onset of the monsoon, heavy scattered rainfall is expected in some regions of Myanmar’s states and regions between May 10 and 15.
According to the announcement, atmospheric disturbances may develop over the Andaman Sea and the southern Bay of Bengal, and monsoon winds could also enter the region. As a result, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Kachin State, Chin State, Rakhine State, and northern Shan State may experience isolated to widespread rain. Meanwhile, Yangon Region, Bago Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kayah State, Kayin State, Mon State, and southern and eastern Shan State could see thundershowers with localized heavy downpours.
Due to the heavy rainfall, strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, flash floods, and landslides may occur. Residents in hilly areas are warned to be cautious of landslides, while those near small rivers and streams should be alert for flooding and water overflow. The department also advised travelers and aviation operators to remain vigilant.
For the first 10 days of May, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Cloud cover is expected to be moderate to thick over the Andaman Sea and southern Bay of Bengal, while the rest of the Bay may experience partly cloudy conditions.
Rainfall is predicted to be above average in Yangon Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kayin State, Mon State, and Shan State. In contrast, Chin State and Rakhine State may receive below-average rainfall, while Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Kachin State, and Kayah State can expect near-normal rainfall with occasional thundershowers.
Rainy days are forecast to range between six to eight days in Yangon Region, Bago Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Mon State, and Shan State. Meanwhile, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Chin State, and Rakhine State may experience three to five days of thundershowers.
Daytime temperatures are expected to be 1.5°C or more above the May average in Mandalay Region, Magway Region, and lower Sagaing Region. In Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, Bago Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and Shan State, temperatures are likely to remain near the seasonal average.
