Security organizations concerned are making necessary investigations into the chairman of the United Democratic Party (UDP) also known as Rose Party, President Office spokesperson Zay Htay has said.

The information comes after a reporter asked the President Office if it is planning to take a certain action against UDP chairman Kyaw Myint following the reports that he was an alleged escapee from jail while serving his prison term for committing a crime.

Via the online President House reporters’ group, some reporters have questioned how the government accepted such an escaped convict as a party leader and why he is holding a Chinese passport as well as a pass to move freely in Canada.

They also quoted Kyaw Myint’s party organizers as saying that UDP’s spending of large sums of money and the payment of party members’ salaries through his own company.

“Replying to these all questions, security organizations are investigating as necessary,” Zaw Htay said in the group chat.

Myanmar Now news agency reported that Kyaw Myint ran Myanmar Kyone Yeom Company. He was sentenced to nine years in prison in 1998 for violating the company's act and money laundering. After serving one year in prison, he managed to escape together with a lance corporal on duty while he was receiving treatment at Mandalay General Hospital on January 19, 1999.

After escaping from Obo Prison in Mandalay, he sought asylum in the US and Canada. He established UDP in 2007 and applied to the Union Election Commission for registration. The commission granted his party registration before the 2010 general election.
