Two policemen were killed and two others injured after they were hit by a car and beaten with sticks while attempting to break up a fight in Shwepaukkan New Town, North Okkalapa Township, according to reports.
The incident occurred at around 12 a.m. on March 9 near the corner of 12th Street on Bagan Main Road in Ward 12 of Shwepaukkan New Town, North Okkalapa Township. Police Force members from the township reportedly went to the scene after receiving information about a fight and attempted to intervene.
While trying to resolve the situation, the Police Force members were allegedly struck by a car and attacked with sticks.
“We only learned about it this morning. We don’t know the exact reason yet. But we heard that two policemen died after being beaten and two others were injured,” said a resident of Shwepaukkan New Town.
The exact cause of the attack remains unclear. Some local media outlets reported that the two policemen died while being transported to North Okkalapa Hospital.
According to a report by the local media outlet News of Myanmar, a man identified as Myat Ko Ko had been fighting when Police Force members arrived at the scene. During the fight, his father and younger brother also arrived.
Later, when the police were preparing to open a case after taking medical reports for the injured parties involved in the fight, Myat Ko Ko allegedly drove a car into them, while his father and younger brother reportedly beat them with sticks.
