Authorities are issuing warnings and urging residents in areas of Myanaung and Ingapu townships, Ayeyawady Region, to evacuate in advance following subsidence of the embankment at Ma Mya Reservoir, according to reports.
The embankment subsidence occurred on the evening of October 9, prompting the relevant authorities to warn residents in nearby towns and villages to relocate to safer areas in advance.
“The reservoir embankment has sunk by about six feet. I understand that the water level is also being lowered. As water is expected to be released, arrangements are being made at Letpan Kwin station hospital to accommodate flood evacuees. Nearly 100 families have arrived so far. As the hospital is located on higher ground, they have been advised to take shelter there. Separate arrangements have been made for patients and flood evacuees. We are working urgently in coordination with the township administration. Warnings have been issued to villages along the creek. Further measures will be taken as necessary, depending on the water release and conditions along the creek,” said U Aung Myo Oo, an Ayeyawady Region Hluttaw representative from Myanaung Township.
Attempts to contact officials responsible for the reservoir to obtain further information about the incident were unsuccessful, as they did not answer phone calls.
Regarding the evacuation warnings in Ingapu Township, U Zaw Lin Aung, an Ayeyawady Region Hluttaw representative for the Ingapu constituency, said, “Ma Mya Reservoir, where the incident occurred, is located within Myanaung Township. If water flows down from Ma Mya Creek, it could reach Ingapu Township. We have been issuing warnings and urging residents to evacuate in advance in case floodwater reaches their areas. I understand that the water pressure is now being reduced.”
Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the Ayeyawady Region Government to obtain further information about the incident and the measures being taken were also unsuccessful, as the spokesperson did not answer phone calls.
