Two men died, and one was rescued alive after they lost consciousness due to oxygen depletion while working inside a well in Mawlamyine’s Kyar Inn neighborhood, according to local rescue teams.

The incident occurred on the morning of April 3 at a residential compound in North Khaywan Shan Village (Nga Street) in Kyar Inn ward. Three men were repairing the well when they lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen, said an official from Freedom Rescue.

"The well is about 20 feet deep and only about 3.5 feet wide. While they were working at the bottom to reinforce the well, the soil collapsed, and two of the men went down to adjust the earth before applying the cement lining. That’s when they lost consciousness due to oxygen deprivation," the official explained.

A third man then descended into the well to attempt a rescue but also succumbed to oxygen depletion. The homeowner called for help, prompting the Mawlamyine Township Fire Service Department and local rescue teams to respond. Rescuers managed to lower a rope to the last man who had entered and pulled him out in time, saving his life.

"There was about waist-deep water in the well. Of the two men still inside, one was floating face-up, while the other was face-down in the water. Both were pulled out and rushed to Mawlamyine People’s Hospital by emergency rescue teams from Shwe Nat Taung and Medha Rama Parahita associations, but they were pronounced dead," the official added.

The deceased were reportedly residents of nearby Naung Khayi neighborhood.

Local police have opened an investigation to determine whether the deaths were accidental or due to other causes.
