The riverside houses in Kawt Hlaik Village, Hpa-an Township, which is prone to landslides due to the erosion of the Thanlwin River, had to be moved urgently, according to residents.
A resident said that landslides have been occurring in the river bank of Kawt Hlaik Village since the erosion from the Thanlwin River, but in the last few days, landslides have occurred near residential houses, so all 16 houses had to be moved urgently.
He continued, “All homes that had to be moved urgently due to landslides will be provided with house building materials subsidies according to the type of home from the Department of Disaster Management. Relief materials and a week's worth of rice were provided on August 31.”
In addition, the State Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems is carrying out emergency river control work in order to reduce the risk of landslides in the banks of Kawt Hlaik Village, which is prone to landslides due to the erosion of the Thanlwin River.
the department placed eight 150-foot long sandbag floating bamboo rafts and five 100-foot long sandbag floating bamboo rafts in the river in order to reduce the flow rate of the Thanlwin River in order to prevent the current river from collapsing, to reduce water erosion on the banks due to the rapid flow of water and to reduce the steepness of the bank and allow the sand to settle.
